Foodstuff

A heavyset man rudely pushed me through the doorway of the Old School Bread Company (105 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach, 561-276-0013). A little pissed off, I followed him to the counter, where he bullied his way to the front of a throng of people, all clamoring for a free sample of the bakery's wonderful artisan breads. A young woman was slicing up a few different loaves as fast as she could, explaining their merits, but she paused when a customer demanded a taste of the chocolate-cherry bread, a signature recipe. "Say please," she said. I cheered her efforts to instill some etiquette into the proceedings. Still, I could see how folks might forget their manners. Open only a couple of months, the Old School is quickly rising in esteem, with almost 30 kinds of breads masterfully baked on the premises. Each loaf, whether it's potato-onion-herb, South Florida sourdough or fig-anise, comes with an owner's manual -- slicing, serving, and storing suggestions for your new bread. Looks like school's in session in Delray Beach, along with a much-needed lesson in decorum.
