The three-year-old Kilwin's franchise on Las Olas Boulevard (809 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-523-8338) is time travel for the sweet tooth. They have enough old-fashioned fudge and homemade peanut brittle to transport you to small-town Michigan circa 1947. That's the year Don and Katy Kilwin opened their first candy store in the little town of Petoskey, Michigan, serving heaps of chocolate and countless scoops of homemade ice cream. Three years ago Michael and Bonnie Sibner brought Kilwin's distinctive brand of all things sugary to South Florida, opening the chain's 35th franchise and the third store in Florida. Michael, whose family owned a Brooklyn candy store when he was growing up, makes a mean egg cream, blending Kilwin's Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream with seltzer water. The store features 11 varieties of fudge (handmade in the store's picture window), 32 flavors of ice cream, 3 types of caramel corn, 2 types of brittle, and 100 different kinds of chocolate.
