Usually an abbey is a place where monks hang out. But in Hollywood there's an abbey that's far from ecclesiastical in nature -- unless you consider beer a religion, as do Ray Rigazio and Rich Dispenzieri, proprietors of The Abbey Brewing Co. (201 N. 21st St., Hollywood, 954-923-8778). The 60-seat pub, their second (the other is on South Beach), not only serves hard-to-find Belgian Trapiste ales (indigenous to monasteries) like La Trappe (from the only monastery in Holland) and unique brews like the local Grain Fest Brown Rice Bock. It stocks two of its own, India Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout. Belly up to the '40s-era Art Deco glass bar with mahogany trim for a pint, and follow it with a chaser of ale-brewed chili. Or do it the other way around. The spiciness will give you an excuse to down a couple of different brews.
