Foodstuff

New River Groves (5660 Griffin Rd., Davie, 954-581-8630) is a five-acre citrus grove, a fudge factory, a mega-fruit stand, and a mecca for what many consider to be the best key lime pie around. Bob and Terry Roth opened the stand in 1963, primarily as a means of selling their oranges and grapefruits. But that modest goal changed 15 years ago when Terry started turning the groves' excess key limes into graham cracker-crusted, whipped cream-topped key lime pies. The pies were an immediate success, and nowadays the Roths sell 20,000 a year, 2500 on the day before Thanksgiving alone. Locals, tourists, and celebrities flock to New River and pay $9.50 each for the creamy, slightly tart pies. The Roths also sell bottles of their own key lime juice and homemade key lime jelly, key lime taffy, and key lime fudge, which is available this Valentine season in the shape of a heart.
