I don't usually devote this space to businesses that no longer exist, but Arugula Café and Darrel & Oliver's East City Grilleboth deserve a proper postmortem. Along with Café Maxx, chef-proprietor Dick Cingolani's Arugula Café was a New World groundbreaker back in the late '80s. Cingolani recently closed his Pompano Beach eatery after a long, successful run. Proprietors Darrel Broek and Oliver Saucy also bade farewell to their East City Grille, but only temporarily, they hope. The Grille was an innovator on North A1A, leading the former Fort Lauderdale strip into its current era of fine dining. But the building in which it was located has been sold and will most likely be demolished.
