Pride and Joy

This one is big

New Timesis mighty proud to announce that columnist Bob Norman is the recipient of the 2001 Livingston Award for national reporting. The competition honors America's best journalist under age 35. NBC anchor Tom Brokaw presented Norman with a certificate and a $10,000 check at a ceremony Monday, June 3, in Manhattan for Norman's series "Admitting Terror," about problems with the INS. Four hundred journalists from throughout the country entered the competition. A reporter from the Boston Globe took the local award, and a team from the Knight-Ridder news service received the international prize. This is the first time any New Times writer has won the award, which is given by the Mollie Parnis Livingston Foundation. Judges included Brokaw, CBS's Mike Wallace, New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines, and CNN international correspondent Christiane Amanpour.

In an unrelated contest sponsored by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, Norman placed second for a news story about Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne's failure to apologize to Frank Lee Smith, who died in prison after a wrongful murder conviction. Former staffer Bob Whitby took second in media reporting for a piece about the Boca Raton News.
