So you think your kids can cook. Now's the time to prove it. The Children's Home Society of Florida is sponsoring the Caring Chefs for Kids Recipe Contest. From September 1 to November 1, children ages 5 to 15 are eligible to enter in three categories: main course (chef); side dish (sous chef); and dessert (pastry chef). Although all dishes will be considered for inclusion in the CHS Caring Chefs for Kids Cookbook, to be released for sale in March 2003, only nine finalists will be chosen January 24. Final selection of the top chef, sous chef, and pastry chef will take place February 2. Recipes will be judged -- by yours truly, no less -- on the strength of creative muses, ingredient uses, and flavorful juices. Entry forms are available at the Children's Home Society Website (www.chsfl.org) and by request at 305-324-1262, ext. 445. Proceeds will benefit the society, a private organization that provides social services, including foster care, emergency shelters, counseling, and abuse prevention. In the current climate of daily reports on lost and missing children, the society is particularly important. And hey, even the worst attempts will probably taste better than the flavor left in our mouths by all the bad news.
