They Still Like Pretending

And he still wants to bang on that drum all day

Still helmed by mainstays Chrissie Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers, Pretenders soldier on, with guitarist Adam Seymour providing the slash-'n'-chop chords once proffered by original member James Honeyman Scott. Their reggae-tinged eighth album, Loose Screw, is far from the most consistent in the band's catalog, though Hynde remains as gruffly charming as ever. Loose Screw does contain the should-be-single "Complex Person," a self-deprecating tune brimming with just enough wit (and profanity) to keep it off the radio. Todd Rundgren spent most of the '90s on the Internet, emerging to tour behind interesting one-off concepts like space-age audience-participatory spectacles or tiki-themed bossa nova revisionism. Perpetually sidetracked by technology though he may be, Rundgren can always be counted on to give up pop gems like a busted gumball machine. Rundgren and Pretenders perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, January 25, at Mizner Park Amphitheatre, 433 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Tickets cost $28 to $38. Call 561-962-4109.
