This is big. "Mutamentum," the eclectic exhibition of German, Italian, and American sculpture (including the works of two sculptors from Palm Beach County), jostles into the Armory Art Center's (1703 S. Lake Ave., West Palm Beach) like a truckload of furniture. Traveling exhibitions of contemporary sculpture are rare because of the expense and difficulty of moving large pieces. But this one just might touch a nerve, the way it looks at the chaos of humanity.
Of course, Terry Thommes, chair of the Armory's sculpture department, doesn't think Americans look much beyond the obvious. The French and Germans do it so much better. "The European mentality is such that they are trying to question what the artist is trying to say, to read the poetic metaphors," Thommes says. Can you dig it? Maybe. Love and Marriage
Two plays tug the heartstrings
Remember the Married with Childrentheme song? "Love and marriage Go together like a horse and carriage." Of course, Peg and Al Bundy were less like a horse and carriage than mayonnaise and peanut butter. But they loved each other, even if he was a disgruntled shoe salesman and she was a brassy wife. For hopeless romantics out there, FAU presents "Courtship Valentine's Day," a pair of plays by Timothy Dial about a couple struggling with their daughter's love for an orphaned clothing salesman. Will love conquer all? Come see at 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Florida Atlantic University Studio I (777 Glades Rd., Boca Raton). Gator Pics
The Loxahatchee River Historical Society (805 N. Federal Hwy., Jupiter) continues its tradition of showing South Florida-centric exhibitions with its latest, "Calling All Gators!" Photographer C.C. Lockwood contributed more than 30 photos to the exhibit. Lockwood, who enjoys a reputation for getting close to his subjects, has been photographing wild animals for decades. Many of the photos in this exhibit bring you face-to-face with these toothsome creatures. The exhibit opens Saturday, April 5, and carries on through June 1. In conjunction with the exhibit, several lectures dedicated to the giant reptile will be held throughout April and May. Admission to the museum is free for children younger than age 6, $3 for children 6 to 18, $4 for seniors, and $5 for adults. Call 561-747-6639.
