Puppet Show

Yes, strings attached

SAT 4/12 Why is it so many children and even adults have an unnatural fear of puppets? Well, the glassy, thousand-yard stare and clappity-clap of Howdy Doody or Mortimer Snerd's wooden mouths aren't exactly soothing. There's something unnerving about a dressed-up hunk of wood teaching kids about the ecosystem of the rainforest. The Puppetry Arts Center (1200 S. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach) wants you to know there's nothing to be afraid of. The center's menagerie of oddball puppets includes expert storytellers, taking kids on adventurous journeys through a variety of landscapes. Come join Jeremy as he goes on safari in Africa and befriends a lion cub. Bob Nathanson of Puppets to Go provides the animated puppet magic. Shows run at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, and admission is $4. Call 561-967-3231. -- Audra Schroeder

SAT 4/12 The Day the World Turned Day-Glo

Picture 20 to 30 kids in a dark room, blindly running around with glow-in-the-dark paint. Sound like every parent's nightmare? Well, it's not quite as scary as a se-quel to Kangaroo Jack. It's actually a timely event. The Young at Art Museum (11584 W. State Rd. 84, Davie) has its finger on the pulse of America, and that's why it's offering a unique day of "Peace, Love and Day-Glo" paint. Kids age 7 and older can "sit-in" a black-light room, paint, and flex their artistic muscle this Saturday. $2 materials fee. Call 954-424-0085. -- Audra Schroeder

SUN 4/13

Let's Dance

Pop-lockin' like it's 1984

Hey kids! Do you ever feel the need to cut loose and bust a move? Do you watch Britney, J-Lo, and N'Sync and wonder how they manage to shake it and not break it? Well, it wasn't from watching Dance PartyUSA or Solid Gold. Nope, they all share one thing: choreographer Darrin Henson. And now you too can get jiggy widdit during Pop Starz Hip-Hop Workshop. Henson shows kidz, teenz, and adultz the 1-2-3-4s of popping, locking, and breaking and showz off the latest hip-hop dance movez. Wow all your friends after school, on the playground, in the cafeteria. And once everyone knows the moves, you can all break into a spontaneous dance sequence. Ya know, like in the movies. The workshop begins at 9 a.m. at the Airport Sheraton Hotel (1825 Griffin Rd., Dania Beach). Call 561-997-1188, visit www.popstarzinc.com. -- Audra Schroeder
