This Column's No Disgrace

But is he awed?: Bob Norman's article in the April 3 edition entitled "An Absolute Disgrace" was excellent, admirable, courageous -- and increasingly necessary in our dangerously changing society. My family, friends, and I have been SHOCKED and OUTRAGED by EVERYTHING that Bush and his evil, lying, greedy, corporate, fascist PIGS have said and done -- especially by their unnecessary, brutal war against Iraq. Of course, Saddam Hussein should have been replaced years ago, but by the United Nations and the Iraqi people -- not by the United States' mass murder. This hellish situation is another example of how the U.N. has failed miserably. It did so twice. First, it failed in stopping the warmongering Bush PIGS from starting the war, and second, it failed in STOPPING the war. Hundreds of well-meaning representatives from around the world constantly meeting and discussing things at the U.N., cannot do their job -- it is tragic. And, it is outrageous that Bush and his violent cronies ignored the U.N.'s findings, views, and decisions, and WENT AHEAD WITH WAR ANYWAY.

Bush is a stupid, ignorant, psychotic, obsessive-compulsive, fraudulent, pathological liar, con artist, corporate puppet, and violent, murdering redneck.

Most Americans are so naive, close-minded, misguided, and militant that they think, "Our politicians mean well," "Bush is liberating the Iraqi people," "We're fighting for freedom and democracy," "Support our troops -- they're defending our country," etc. NONE of these things are true.

I'm 60 years old and a veteran of the incredible political and corporate corruption, deceit, imperialism, and killing/destruction of the Vietnamese people. That era woke up many of us previously sleepy Americans. Tragically, I don't see that happening now.

Lastly, there is another, and what could possibly be the major, element in all of this: that of "evil" increasing its influence. Many believe it is the beginning of real Armageddon. Obviously, monsters like Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Ari Fleischer, and their greedy, fraudulent, secretive, imperialistic, violent, political and corporate cronies have a lot of evil in them.

Have courage, and continue to awaken your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and readers. We are experiencing increasing authoritarianism and we must fight them.

She's sure awed:What a sad, but tragically accurate column summing up the horrible divisions in our country today. I'm very proud that people still exist who speak out and that there are at least some media outlets that still print their honest words.

Laura Erickson Duluth, Minnesota

Awed is not in this one's vocabulary:Thank you so much for saying what many of us believe about G.W. Bush and the Bush Administration -- not just on the war but on all aspects of its domestic agenda as well. It is only through this kind of honesty that the sheep will finally begin to wake up.

Keep talking. Soon we will be the majority and we will take credit for removing this ugly boil from the collective butt of America and the world in 2004.

Awe, shucks:I think you are quite brave and I applaud New Times for not taking the path of least resistance. Bush is a jerk, and I wish I could find a bumper sticker that said so!

Counting shekels:I agree with most of what you say or imply. But then there's this: "The bomb makers will count their money, the oil men will dance in their offices, and our national treasury will be looted...."

In case you hadn't noticed, we HAVE NO "national treasury." That is why we are invading Iraq. Not only do we have no treasury, but we have no wealth with which to back our credit and currency. And another thing you failed to note: The peacemakers outnumber the hawks by about 4 to 1. It helps.

Balancing the books:I've never been to New Times' website before. I got there by linking from the Dallas Observer's... I've never written an author before either. I just wanted him to add another notch in his count of "support" e-mails. That was a great story, and in the few minutes it took for me to read it I learned a lot. I wanted to say thank you, and I am sure for every hateful warmonger out there, there is someone good to balance it out.

Praise Be to...New Times:Eric Barton's March 27 story on the FAU presidency search was great. New Times provides such in-depth articles for the average person that I enjoy every issue. Kudos for the great work.!

Not Florida's bonehead system:I want to commend Eric Alan Barton for his excellent cover story. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Florida's university system has become a haven for politicians.

Local readers may not know that a similar outcome took place at Florida State University last year. After an extensive, costly, nationwide search, the good 'ol boys of the Tallahassee school named as their president, former legislator and political insider, T.K. Wetherell. There are similarities between the selections of Frank Brogan and Wetherell; the notable distinction is that T.K. (as he is known in the corridors of the capitol) has an earned doctorate.
