The Derby on the telly, greyhounds on the track

SAT 5/4

This Saturday is possibly the most prestigious day in horseracing. Churchill Downs. The Run for the Roses. The Kentucky Derby. The Derby is the first of the big three races that make up horseracing's Triple Crown. It's followed by the Preakness on May 18 and the Belmont Stakes on June 8. If there is to be a triple-crown winner, that steed must begin the long, storied road today. The Palm Beach Kennel Club offers simulcasts of the Derby, along with 15 greyhound races. In business since 1932, the club has a long history of dog racing, including being home base for Pat C Rendevous, whose 1994 streak of 36 wins remains the world record in the three-eighths-mile event. Canines such as Pat chase that rabbit with, ahem, dogged determination. -- Dan Sweeney

Fore!

Bobby Bowden and company tee off

We live in contested ground. Just a few miles to the south lies the University of Miami. The Hurricanes are the preferred NCAA team, no matter the sport. But there are invaders from the north, a rampaging tribe of Seminoles -- and not the Native American kind. These people are led by Bobby Bowden, and he is ruthless. An American by birth and a Southern Baptist by the grace of God, Bowden will let nothing stand in his way as he comes to Fort Lauderdale to -- play 18 holes! Yes, Florida State Coach Bowden leads the 26th-annual Bobby Bowden Celebrity Golf Tournament beginning at 7 a.m. at the Bonaventure Resort (200 Bonaventure Blvd., Weston). A round of golf for four runs $450. 'Noles fans are invited to play the links; Hurricanes fans should come and jeer. Call 954-722-3213, or register online at www.fsubrowardnoles.com/golf. -- Dan Sweeney
