THU 5/8Hot on the trail of other God-fearin' folks like country star Toby "Angry American" Keith and John "Mighty Eagle" Ashcroft comes the Rev. Timothy Wright in the "We Support Our Troops" gospel concert. Participants are encouraged, naturally, to wear red, white, and blue. Ya know, just so everyone knows you're an American, and you're the best! Anyone who says otherwise gets a boot up the ass, per Mr. Keith. There will also be a prayer vigil before the concert, and partial proceeds go to purchase care packages for troops. Hooray for America! Come show your support at 7 p.m. at the Broward Community College Omni Auditorium, 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek. Tickets cost $7. Call 954-201-2233.
FRI 5/9While the title may be fun -- if difficult -- to say five times fast, the Feline Fancy Flashy Feast is more than just a cool name. The fundraising dinner and auction, held at the DoubleTree Guest Suites (2670 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) at 7 p.m., is the fifth annual such soiree to benefit Cats Exclusive, a nonprofit organization that runs a low-cost spay/neuter program and no-kill shelter in Margate. Since 1996, more than 2,000 cats have been adopted out to cat-loving homes. All well and good. Just keep those things away from us cat-allergic dog lovers -- we demand unswerving loyalty and unconditional love out of our dumb animals. Seriously, though, not only is the Fancy Feasty Flash (or whatever) a great cause but there's stuff to be won. Top prize in the auctions and raffles is a trip for two to Grand Bahama Island. Get the suntan lotion ready. Tickets cost $45, $80 for two. Call 954-476-7743.
SAT 5/10Touting themselves as "Boston's original mouth band," Ball in the Housebrings its musical mission of "six guys, six mouths" to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts' Dreyfoos Hall (701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach). There are no instruments. Yes, you heard right. Dave (the "bad boy"), Dan, Jon J, Mike, Stephen, and Aaron (the cute one) step into the boy-band arena with lyrics such as "Girl I don't know if I can take it slow/ Cuz you've got it going on." Lyrics like that make up for the fact that there are no instruments. No, Ball in the House, you've got it going on. The group even covers Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon." Yowza! Is it getting hot in here, or is it them? Pick your favorite member of BITH and see a unique a cappella repertoire of cover songs and original works at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $8. Call 561-832-7469.
SUN 5/11It's Mother's Day (better buy that card now, you damned procrastinators!), and what better way to celebrate the most important woman in your life (wives being a possible exception) than by taking her out to the Women's Expo? Held at the Boca Town Center Mall (6000 Glades Rd., Boca Raton), this is the final day of the three-day event. More than 90,000 people are expected to stop by throughout the weekend to visit the booths of national and local businesses that cater to the wants and needs of the feminine world. Call 561-998-1995.
MON 5/12After being kicked to the curb by Democrats in Florida's gubernatorial primary, Janet Reno puts in an appearance at the next meeting of the Broward County Young Democrats at Cascades Restaurant (301 SW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale) at 7:30 p.m. The conventional wisdom during the elections held that Reno was unelectable, what with the Elián fiasco holding her back in the South and gun-toting, "Remember Waco!" loonies in the North. Sure, you could point out that gun nuts and Cuban exiles never would have voted for Democrat Reno anyway, but such voices of reason were hard to come by in the dark days of 2002. Though the Dem faithful held out some hope for a successful campaign by Bill McBride early on, the truth was painfully obvious by Election Day. For Reno, though, the race was long over by then, and she had already begun looking to the future. And just what awaits the ex-attorney general and Elaine Benes-style dancer? You'll have to ask her to find out. Admission is free. Call 954-593-8826.
TUE 5/13With recent reviews in such respected literary journals as Us Weekly, Lauren Weisberger's new book, The Devil Wears Prada, seems well on its way to the upper echelons of the bestseller list. To the casual outside observer, it appears as if Weisberger took her professional disgruntlement and, rather than going the usual route and buying an Uzi to lay waste to the boss, instead lays waste to her in print. Weisberger was once assistant to Anna Wintour, the iron-fisted editor of Vogue, a woman reputed to be impossible to please. The book, then, describes the trials and tribulations of Andrea Sachs, who becomes an assistant to bitchy RunwayEditor Miranda Priestly. Art truly does imitate life. And with as much to work with as Weisberger should have -- Wintour's temper is mythical in proportion -- that art should be entertaining indeed to those interested in the fluffy world of fashion. Meet Weisberger at 7 p.m. when she puts in an appearance at Borders Books and Music (9887 Glades Rd., Boca Raton). Admission is free. Call 561-883-5854.
WED 5/14The ever-expanding kiddie empire of Australian children's entertainers the Wiggles isn't all that surprising. After all, if there's one demographic that is easily cajoled into buying stuff, it would be the "younger than 10" crowd. Of course, Greg, Murray, Anthony, and Jeff can't be everywhere at once, so rather than leave kids waiting around for the next Wiggles concert tour, the foursome sends out its troupe of sidekicks. In its first appearance in the United States, the Dorothy the Dinosaur Show comes to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (2855 Coral Springs Dr., Coral Springs) at 4 p.m. The show features Dorothy, of course, as well as Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, and the fearsome Captain Feathersword -- OK, so the Feathersword guy isn't really that fearsome. But along with the three animals, the captain stirs up all sorts of merriment for kids of all ages. Call 954-341-8300.
