Sure, kites are fun to fly on a lazy summer afternoon or, if you're quite mad, maybe during a thunderstorm. But did you know there is a "kite culture" in Japan? Kites aren't just a way to pass time there; they're works of art. And these works are the subject of local author Wayne Hosking's new exhibition, "A Riot of Color Against the Blue: Japanese Kites from the Collection of Wayne Hosking." The exhibit takes visitors on a vibrant journey through geometric forms, shapes, and a variety of colors. View the kites and maybe even learn a little bit about history at Morikami Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Rd., Delray Beach. Exhibit runs until September 21 and is free with museum admission. The Goon Squad Comes to Town

When one thinks of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, all manner of fine arts crop into the mind before fashion makes an appearance. But while graphic arts, painting, sculpture, and what have you may be the more readily noticeable arts, fashion design happens to be one of the institute's most popular associate-degree programs, teaching prospective future Yves St. Laurents and Donatella Versaces the basics of the business. See the results as the institute presents its fourth-annual Fashion Design Student and Alumni Fashion Show at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 (2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale). Postcards from the Edge

Just as singers want to be actors and actors want to be singers, it's not strange for college professors to want to dabble in the arts. Florida Atlantic University Professor Anthony Guneratne has studied the practice of "deltiology," the collecting and studying of postcards (yes, a real science), and now presents an exhibition of his personal collection. "Modernism for the Masses: Artist-designed Postcards from the Collection of Anthony Guneratne" displays postcards from the late 19th Century to the mid-20th Century, highlighting the neo-impressionism, symbolism, and modernism movements. Who says art is dead? See the exhibition at Broward County Main Library's Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The exhibit runs through July 20.
