Beauty pageants are like the cockroach you step on that scurries away. No matter how hard we want to squish them, they just won't die. The Miss Florida USA Pageant parades into Hollywood this year to crown the purtiest durn lady in the state. So what does it take to be Miss Florida? Let's see. The consummate beauty-pageant contestant is studying to be something scholarly, like a lawyer or a neurosurgeon. She also volunteers at the local homeless shelter and lives at home with her parents, spending quiet evenings after sign-language class on their big wooden porch sipping tea. But she also has the enviable talent to totter down a catwalk in a swimsuit and heels with three pounds of makeup on her face. This year's pageant features six of Broward's own and is broadcast live at 7 p.m. from the Westin Diplomat, 3555 S. Ocean Dr., Hollywood. The Age of Aquarium

Visitors to Anne Kolb Nature Center (751 Sheridan St., Hollywood) at 2 p.m. get a behind-the-scenes look at the center's 3,500-gallon aquarium. Participants get to see the animals being fed while a naturalist describes the flora and fauna of West Lake's aquatic ecosystem. After taking in interactive displays and a ten-minute video that describes West Lake in more detail, visitors proceed to the EcoRoom to get a hands-on experience with some of South Florida's shallow-water residents. Admission is $1, with annual passes for $5. Call 954-926-2480. -- Dan SweeneyTHU 7/10Drink o' the Month

We kick off a new contribution to See/Be Seen with this month's pick for Drink o' the Month. We promise to bring you analyses of the area's sweetest libations. This month's drink, the Drunken Monkey, comes to us from Kim's Alley Bar (Gateway Shopping Center, 1920 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale), where Laurrie Pood, New Times' Best Bartender 2000, considers it her specialty:

1 oz. 99 Bananas schnapps

1 oz. Stoli Raspberry

Equal parts Sprite and pineapple juice

A splash of cranberry juice

Shake well and serve in a highball glass
