Renowned chef Oliver Saucy, co-proprietor of Darrel & Oliver's Café Maxx in Pompano Beach and East City Grill in Weston, is no stranger to awards. In 1998, he brought a James Beard home to South Florida, and in 2001, he was recognized with the Robert Mondavi Award of Excellence. But the honor that may mean the most to him is his latest, Share Our Strength's 2003 Chef of the Year Award for the Southern Region. Share Our Strength is a national antihunger organization composed of chefs and restaurateurs, and activist Saucy has been head of the Broward County chapter since its inception in 1991. As such, he's been responsible for raising more than $1 million, 100 percent of which is donated to hunger-relief causes, during his decade or so of service. No matter how cavalier we've become about a million bucks -- hey, you could win it on a reality show just for being a bachelor -- it's still a lot of money. When dedicated toward feeding the hungry, it also puts priorities in perspective.
