During their nine-month existence, the second incarnation of Panda Bite has practiced seven times, once for every gig it has played. This is due to both the hectic schedules of Montoya's bandmates and the improvisational spirit of the band. "We always change the endings live," Montoya explains. Panda Bite's free-flowing nature doesn't always endear them to area audiences, as evidenced by their gig at July's South Florida Fuzz Fest. "The promoter didn't know what he was doing and booked way too many bands," Alonso relates. "This girl wanted to see the Fleshtones. We did four songs instead of three, and she started bugging out."
"She got on-stage and threw a fit," Montoya interjects. "She threw her drink at me, so I put my guitar in front of her face and shook it at her."
But for every enraged art chick, there's a new fan spreading dandruff on the stage or getting his nose broken by standing too close to Alonso's bass. One recent convert is ex-As Friends Rust singer Damian Moyal, who replaced Montoya's distortion-box vocals on a particularly catchy, as-yet-unnamed Panda Bite track. "It's a hit!" Montoya exclaims over the phone. "I'd better come up with a name for it. Can you call back in an hour?"
