This Is a Man's World

But it wouldn't be nothin' without a doggie

SUN 11/2Ah, nothing like a day at the track, be it horse or dog. Place a few bets, enjoy a few frantic moments of excitement. When an animal's career is over, though, most people don't give the retired beasts a second thought. For a successful racing horse, that end is often marked by stud work -- ah, the life. For a dog, though, the final days are often considerably grimmer, which is why there are organizations such as Friends of Greyhounds Inc. The greyhound rescue group hosts "Woofstock" at Tree Tops Park (3900 SW 100th Ave., Davie) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Held in the park's Sabal Palm Shelter, the event features a DJ, dog contests, and even the opportunity to have your animal blessed. And should you not have a dog of your own, several groups will be on hand with information and animals awaiting adoption. Admission is free, though some activities have fees. SAT 11/1There are cat lovers, and then there are cat lovers. And cat loversare a strange breed. You've probably seen them, as South Florida seems to be a furry mecca for animal apparel obsession. Now, it's not fair to judge someone who loves his feline companions so much that he treats them like children. But do cats really need jackets in Florida? Anyway, "Cat's Exclusive's Cat Show" takes place at the War Memorial Auditorium (800 NE Eighth St, Fort Lauderdale), featuring hundreds of pedigreed and mixed-breed cats, a contest, cat and kitten adoption, booths selling cat specialty items (i.e., clothing), and endangered wildlife info from Survival Outreach Sanctuary. Get your cat fancy on Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12. Call 954-828-5380. -- Audra Schroeder
