Hot Dance, Cool Breeze

WED 12/31 Lovers of all things Latin should flock to Hollywood Beach on New Year's Eve. Heat and passion will be dished out liberally when the Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico serves up two nights of contemporary and classical Latin dance on the Broadwalk overlooking the ocean.

"Oceandance 2003," which is being presented free by the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, should do much to sate South Florida's Latin dance appetite. The troupe will show off the diversity of Puerto Rican dance and music with two consecutive nights of presentations.

On New Year's Eve, Ballet Concierto will showcase modern movements, including salsa and merengue, set to the music of current Latin pop stars. On New Year's Day, the troupe explores more formal Hispanic ballet in a rendition of Carmen.

The show on Wednesday begins at 9:30 p.m. and ends with a midnight fireworks display to bring in 2004. Thursday, Carmen begins at 8 p.m.

WED 12/31 Fads come and go, but metrosexual -- the term used to describe heterosexual men who find useful lifestyle points in the stereotype of gay men -- may be the first fad to have gone out seemingly before it came in. Maybe it's because, deep down, most men are dirty, beer-swilling troglodytes, just one step removed from their ape cousins. Whatever the case, a lot of people's first knowledge of the word metrosexual came when it was being skewered on shows like South Park or in the pages of men's magazines.
