SAT 12/27 Any guess what's the most popular New Year's resolution? The smart money's on health improvement. Anything remotely related to losing weight, quitting smoking, toning up, building muscle, eating healthier, yadda, yadda, yadda. With that said, you've got two opportunities to get your 2004 fresh starts under way early. Saturday's "Resolution 5K Run/Fitness Walk" is being held at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park (3019 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale Road Runner's Club, the run offers participants a free year's membership and also a commemorative T-shirt. Entry fee is $35 for nonmembers, $30 for current Road Runners. The event starts at 7:30 a.m. and is open to all ages, offering a Student Mile and Kids Fun Run along with the 5K races. Call 954-970-7752, or visit www.gflrrc.org. On Sunday, you can head down to the Hollywood Broadwalk for the "FedEx Orange Bowl Trek with the Coast 5K Run/Fitness Walk." This race also starts at 7:30 a.m., beginning at the Hollywood Beach Bandshell at A1A and Johnson Street. Entry fee is $20 for all ages; new shoes along with Runner's Depot gift certificates will be awarded for first through third overall and per age group. ... Or at least learn how to
SAT 12/27 It's never too early to start on that baseball career. In fact, if you're a high school ball player with hopes of getting the attention of scouts, you should already be thinking about the future. You'll need to catch the eye of a good college for that all-important scholarship, after all, before you even get looked at by the pro scouts -- though if you're real good, they'll just pick you up right out of high school and toss you into the minor leagues.
So how to get their attention? Well, why not listen to the advice of the scouts themselves? The "Marty Maier All-Pro Baseball Clinic," held this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nova High School playing field (3600 College Ave., Davie), features advice and evaluation from professional scouts and coaches. Admission is $199. Call 866-387-8523. -- Dan Sweeney
