Down! Set! Hike!

The intercounty rivalry comes to a head

MON 1/19 Just because there are no playoffs in South Florida doesn't mean you need to go without topnotch pigskin action until September. The seventh-annual South Florida All-Star Football Game takes place Monday, January 19, at Miami-Dade North Community College's Traz Powell Stadium (11380 NW 27th Ave., Miami). The game pits the best high school talent in Broward against the finest Miami-Dade County has to offer. The Broward squad will be led by Player of the Year Brent Schaeffer, Deerfield Beach's all-world quarterback. Talent from Broward includes running back Leon Washington of Hallandale, American Heritage running back Dilvory Edgecomb, and linebacker Vernon Smith from Dillard. The Miami-Dade team boasts Southridge quarterback Phillip Simpson, that county's Player of the Year. Broward leads the series 4-2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and tickets are $10. SAT 1/17 A company's guaranteeing its product goes a long way toward ensuring quality. In the sports world, one doesn't come across bold-faced assurances often. The purchase of a ticket certifies only that the team will try hard and that you might have a decent time. But the Miami Manatees are shattering the mold and putting their money you-know-where. When the Lakeland Loggerheads come to the Miami Arena (701 Arena Blvd., Miami) on Saturday, January 17, the team is guaranteeing a victory. And what if it does fall to those half shells from North Florida? Manatee brass will buy everyone's ticket for Sunday's rematch against the aforementioned Loggerheads. Of course, the team's pretty confident, considering their 8-1-1 record at the arena this season. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Call 305-536-7825. -- Russ Evans
