Fighting fires and cooking steaks

In addition to being everyday heroes, firefighters are also Iron Man competitors, calendar models, and cookbook contributors. Wait, cookbooks? Actually, cooks and firefighters aren't such strange bedfellows, since both strive to control the heat. And "firehouse chili" often wins chili contests. So perhaps it's not so strange that John Wilson, a Boca Raton firefighter, would open a 45-seat restaurant, Savories (725 N. A1A, Jupiter, 561-747-8747). Actually, Wilson is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and trained at multistarred hotel restaurants in the Northeast. His self-described "American bistro" puts those talents to good use: Now when he's not putting out fires, he's lighting them -- under steaks, seafood, pastas, and homemade soups. No doubt he's a guy who can stand the heat in his kitchen.
