SAT 3/6 Enjoy the breezy spring temperatures, because in no time flat, every rush-hour motorist from here to the Golden Glades will be sticking to his seat with sweat. Think you can pull yourself away from the pool long enough to run a few miles? How about walking a couple of laps? The "Maroone Rotary 5K" happens today in Fort Lauderdale. Participants start from Huizenga Plaza, at Andrews Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard. The course winds through Riverwalk and around downtown. Registration costs $20 before race day, $25 at the event. They're all stars

SAT 3/6 Tired of prima donna athletes with drastically inflated salaries, egos, and biceps acting as if they're God's gift to society? Don't ya wish they would just shut up and realize how good they got it? How'd you like to check out some athletes who are thankful for every pass, shot, and step they take on the court or field? The Palm Beach County Special Olympics Summer Games is being held at Santaluces High School (6880 Lawrence Rd., Lantana) on Saturday, March 6. More than 500 Special Olympians will take part in this full day of competition. Boys and girls of all ages, colors, shapes, and sizes will compete in events like tennis, track and field, cycling, soccer, and volleyball. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies commencing at 9 a.m. Competition will run until 4 p.m. The event is open to the public free of charge, and all are encouraged to come out and volunteer or lend support. THU 3/4 So which major league team fared the best this off-season, collecting the most trophies for its mantel? Some say the Yankees, thanks to the A-Rod coup. Others will cite acquisitions like Curt Schilling and Keith Foulke and give the nod to Boston. The Cubbies got Mr. Cy Young, Greg Maddux, and ex-Marlin gold glover Derek Lee. Hey, anyone seen what the Baltimore Orioles did? They only got a catcher who hit 43 homers last year, the 2002 American League MVP, and a sure-to-be Hall of Famer with 528 dingers on his résumé. Oh, and they also got their 2003 opening day starter back from the Giants. This spring, hope springs eternal in Fort Lauderdale. Today, the Orioles welcome South Florida's own World Champion Florida Marlins to Fort Lauderdale Stadium (1401 NW 55th St.) for their 1:05 p.m. spring opener. For tickets, call 954-828-4980. -- Russ Evans
