SUN 4/18 Need a little excitement in your exercise routine? How about changing the weekly jog into a chase game of cat and mouse... er, dog and rabbit? The Hash House Harriers is a social club for runners based on the old English game of Hares and Hounds, in which two runners are given a head start and drop shredded paper behind them to mark their trail as they go. The Hares stop laying a trail after a while and then take off in a different direction and, after about 100 yards, start re-laying a new trail. The rest of the group's Hounds would then follow, attempting to catch the Hares. This exercise goes on until one or several Hounds catch the fleeing Hares. The club has thousands of chapters with tens of thousands of members worldwide, all partaking of the chase on a regular basis. Oh, and here's the best part: After the chase is over, everyone gets together to kick up their feet and crack open a few brews. In fact, club members describe themselves as "drinkers with a running problem." This week, the Harriers have numerous events scheduled in Broward County. On Sunday, the South Florida Traveling Buff Hash kicks off at noon. On Monday, a member named "Eatapus" will serve as the evening's Hare in a 6:30 p.m. run. Call 954-680-HASH. -Russ Evans

... with other golf-club-swingin' singles

SUN 4/18 Got a problem rounding up three other duffers to complete your golf foursome each week? You're in luck, because the Linking Up Singles Golf Club is looking for new members. Definitely sounds more exciting than your last run-of-the-mill pitch-and-putt experience. Their next gathering takes place Sunday at the Raintree Golf Club (1600 S. Hiatus Rd., Pembroke Pines). Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $46 for members and $56 for nonmembers; yearly membership costs $45. Call 954-472-2211. -Russ Evans
