While the band's name conjures up visions of Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski, this Madison, Wisconsin, post-punk quintet was inspired to form by self-deprecating funnyman Neil Hamburger. The band took baby steps in 1998, when recording its self-titled demo in the Madison studio of Kyle Fischer, a guitarist for indie rockers Rainer Maria. In 1999 came the mild-flavored debut, So, You Think It's Hot Here? Then the group eschewed the weak emo formula and embraced a newfound Midwestern bravado full of angular guitars and punk grit on 2000's Brazilliant EP. Vocalist Scott Sherpe also realized that he wasn't British and toned down the accent. Paris, Texas made up for a forgettable start and played with acts including Sunday's Best and the Detachment Kit before a slew of complications drove the band to Quitdom, USA. Soon, though, the boys regrouped for their upcoming release, Like You Like an Arsonist. Whether it will set the punk world on fire remains to be seen, but at least there will always be a Paris in Cheese Country.
