Foodstuff

Each spring, more than 60 cities across the United States and Canada organize Taste of the Nation food and winetastings, seated dinners, brunches, barbecues, and all manner of gastronomic extravaganzas. Since 1988, these events have raised nearly $50 million, which has helped to support more than 450 organizations working to end hunger and poverty. The 12th-annual Broward & South Palm Beach Share Our Strength's (SOS) Taste of the Nation will be held Wednesday, May 5, at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward Convention Center. Guests will socialize, sip wines, and dine on snacks prepared by 50 of the area's top chefs and restaurants, while live and silent auctions will help raise funds -- more than $1 million has been collected by the Fort Lauderdale-based event over the past 11 years. Doors open at 7 p.m. General-admission tickets are $75 per person ($85 at the door); VIP tickets, which include a martini-and-champagne reception, are $125 per person. To order, call 888-633-9861. This year's theme is "Feel the Heat," but, in truth, it's more about feeling compassion.
