The nation's largest outdoor Cajun/zydeco music festival does not take place anywhere in Louisiana but right here at the Fort Lauderdale festival site every Mother's Day weekend, which this year falls May 7 to 9. More specifically, the 12th Annual Fort Lauderdale Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival (954-828-5934, 866-352-3378) offers three stages of continuous live music by authentic Cajun and zydeco performers and an acoustic stage set up in the woods for fiddlers. Four wooden dance floors and free dance lessons give you and your loved one a chance to learn basic and advanced zydeco and waltz, Creole line dancing, and more. A kids zone features crafts, special performances by the artists, and a "children's watermelon sacrifice," which, quite frankly, sounds creepy. Adults can enter a crawfish-eating contest, gumbo cookoff, or just fill themselves up noncompetitively at the signature Crawfish Boil, where more than 35,000 pounds of the tasty crustaceans will be steamed. Local restaurants will serve other popular Louisiana cooking. For Browardites, the Big Easy doesn't get any bigger or easier.
