Battle of the Boards

Surf on the big screen

SUN 5/16 Good thing the Atlantic Ocean has been wicked flat as of late. Otherwise, you might want to go surfing, not watch a film about surfing. In which case, brahs and bettys, you'd be missing out. Veteran surf filmmaker Jack McCoy -- yep, the same guy who directed Tubular Swells in 1976 -- is on a mission to get surf movies off VHS tapes and onto big screens, where, we admit, they belong. He brings his latest reel of gorgeousness, Blue Horizon, on a five-week national tour that includes a pit stop at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale) -- which would be cool if it weren't such a tease. In this documentary, filmed at world-class surf spots over two years, McCoy mixes a history lesson about the development of surfing with a reality-show plot line about the battle for the 2003 world championship. Who you gonna root for? Andy Irons, who snatched the world title in 2002 and damn sure wants to keep it? Six-time world champ Kelly Slater, who battles Irons for the top spot and struggles to get back on top of his game? Or Dave "Rasta" Rastovich, who really couldn't give a flying frontside air, as he doesn't even compete but travels with Andy and the Billabong team, enjoying his freestyling, soul-surfing self? The movie shows at 6 and 8:15 p.m. and costs $5. Call 954-525-FILM. -- Deirdra Funcheon Do the Robot No More

This salsa's extra hot

SAT 5/15 For some folks, salsa is a hot, tangy dipping sauce. For others, it's a hot, sexy Latin beat. Here, we're focusing on the hip-swiveling -- not nibbling -- sort of salsa. Salsabor Tropical Dance School is holding a bash for the second birthday of its monthly salsa socials. DJs spin salsa-friendly tunes as salsaholics, from novices to performers work their sensual, expressive moves on the dance floor. So, c'mon -- you've been doing the robot for years, and it's time to move past that! The event lasts from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Millennium Ballroom (1484 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach). Admission costs $10. Call 786-290-0376, or visit www.salsabortropical.com. -- Patti Roth
