It took about nine years for Brian Fair, lead singer of Shadows Fall, to cultivate his impressive dreads. It took the band less than four years to become one of underground metal's loudest new acts. And when we say metal, we're talking about old-school metal -- the crushing, blistering thrash of Slayer or Napalm Death. SF's latest album, the Art of Balance, is an aptly named epic of heavy doom mixed with melodic guitar solos. That's right, it's bringing back the guitar solo. Shadows Fall hits Fort Lauderdale this week on the Strhess Tour with fellow heavies As I Lay Dying, Himsa, and Remembering Never. -- Audra Schroeder

Check out the Strhess Tour at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $12. Call 954-564-1074.
