Death Cab for Cutie

Surely, Ben Gibbard's lyrics have been the impetus for many a mixtape since Death Cab for Cutie started in 1997. His lyrics drip and ache with longing and lust and extract that ubiquitous feeling that deep down we're all fucked up, searching for that one person to unfuck us up. The foursome's latest album, Transatlanticism, provides even more fodder for the young and the restless, churning out lovely, melodic songs with conflicted characters that could have fallen out of a Hopper painting or a Henry Miller novel. To wit: "God damn the black night with all its foul temptation/I become what I always hated when I was with you then/We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact/Fumbling to make contact as the others slept inside."
