While trance and jungle trace their origins back to Europe, breakbeat is exclusively ours. Taking cues from hip-hop and electro, the chunky beats and arpeggiated melodies of breakbeat have drawn equal fanaticism from b-boys and club kids. We fortunate Floridians can boast one of the genre's greatest champions, Orlando's DJ Icey.
A DJ and producer since the mid-'90s, Icey was discovered by influential BBC Radio 1 personality Pete Tong, soon becoming the first American artist to sign with his FFRR label and to record an Essential Mixfor the imprint. Since then, Icey has made the cover of URB, toured the world, and released seven albums, including three original works, selling 300,000 copies in the U.S. alone. Now promoting his new opus, For the Love of the Beat, Icey brings his own bumping beats, reedited and revamped, to South Florida. Robot and liquid dances are a given. -- Kiran Aditham
