The Deep End

On the Radar

Until recently, geriatrically inclined Hollywood was never mistaken as a magnet for dance music culture or even a second-tier nightlife destination. In recent years, though, as the Young Circle area has been revamped, the town's club scene has undergone its own resuscitation. One of its freshest additions is the sharp, dazzling Club Sonar.

The 6-month-old space -- sporting an urban eclectic décor with white popcorn lighting, a deep-red bar, and sleek white couches -- offers both ultramodern lounge and dance-floor environments, whether you need to break it down or kick your feet up. More than a way station for numbed trendoids, the club intends to play a leading role in bringing new sounds to thirsty ears. "Sonar's purpose is to educate and regulate the electronic music scene in South Florida," owner Inbal Lankry says. "We want to teach those who don't know and to give a haven to those who do." The curriculum spans the dance music disciplines, ranging from house, trance, psy-trance, d 'n' b, breaks, techno, goth, and IDM.

Already on the map for Vamp, its famed goth/industrial Friday, Sonar now adds Tech Tuesdays to its musical programming. Along with the best local breaks and electro DJs, Tech Tuesdays will feature spinners from Tampa and Orlando dropping some wisdom. And Sonar's services don't end there, as Lankry and company. will also import rising stars from Canada and the United Kingdom. If Sonar's current ascent is any indication, Hollywood's cultural landscape is changing for the better.

Resident DJs Polyphonics, Trauma, Bobby O'Hara, Mike Freeze, and Section 808 play Tech Tuesdays at Club Sonar, 2006 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. Call 954-920-8777.
