Raw Action

WWE returns to South Florida

MON 1/10

Many impostors have attempted to mimic the brilliance of World Wrestling Entertainment, promoter Vince McMahon's brainchild. Myriad copycats have tried everything from octagon-shaped rings to matches ending in ties but never truly measured up. WWE enters 2005 stronger than ever, continuing a storied wrestling history that dates back well over 20 years. The WWE's Monday-night event, Raw, is the king of the company's two shows -- the other is Thursday's Smackdown. Raw has given life to crossover stars the Rock and Triple H; a new breed of studs comes to South Florida this week for an action-packed night of pro wrestling at the Office Depot Center (1 Panthers Pkwy., Sunrise). Among the WWE superstars scheduled to appear: Chris Jericho, Edge, Maven, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, and Mick Foley, with Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler on hand to call all the action. Tickets range from $21.50 to $41.50. Wax your chest, slather on the oil, and grab a ringside seat. Doors open at 6 p.m.; first match starts at 7:30. Call 954-835-8000. -- Russ Evans

Duck!

Beware of flying balls

FRI 1/7

Ever since you saw the movie Dodgeball, you've been telling all your friends how you're going to join a league, get in shape, yada yada. Naturally, all you've managed to do thus far is rent more Ben Stiller movies. So here's your chance to put your body where your mouth is, as it were; Friday is the last day to register for the Winter Adult Off-the-Wall Dodge Ball League at West Boynton Park and Recreation Center (6000 Northtree Blvd., Boynton Beach). If you're afraid of getting hurt, well, just keep in mind that the ball is hollow (unlike baseballs) and big, meaning it travels only as fast as your opponent can hurl it (unlike paintballs, which really freakin' hurt). Plus, you don't have to feel bad about not knowing the rules; you're not dealing with pro athletes here. And maybe it'll give you incentive to lose that holiday gut -- you don't want to be an easy target. Games are played every Friday at 6:30 p.m. beginning January 21. The league fee is $50 per team. Call 561-355-1125. -- Jason Budjinski

Got My Dojo Workin'

Martial arts -- free!

SAT 1/8

There's an old martial arts saying: "The warrior may choose pacifism; all others are condemned to it." And there's an old American saying: "Hey, skinny, yer ribs are showin'." The teachings of the Bushido Knights stand at the nexus of these two themes. Bushido is a self-development course based on the ancient samurai's code of conduct. Find inner peace as well as the lid to your personal can of whup-ass. Free classes are offered from 7:15 to 9 p.m. on January 8, 10, 11, and 12 at the Bushido Academy of Martial Arts (221 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach). Call 954-455-1005 for reservations. -- Jeff Megahan

Feelin' the Flow

SAT 1/8

Billed as the monthly cycle that women actually look forward to, Club Mud is throwing its first Feminine Flow Ride extravaganza of the new year Saturday at Quiet Waters Park (401 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach). The rides are for mountain bikers of all skill levels and also feature a "nobody gets left behind" group for slower peddlers. Meeting time is 9 a.m. for the 9:30 ride. Call 954-360-1315. -- Russ Evans
