Remembering NeverWomen and Children Die First(Ferret)

SimplekillA Novel in May(Self-released)

Between these two undersubtle, overwrought Fort Lauderdale hardcore bands is only the tiniest distinction. Simplekill screamer Panjo sounds like he gargled a bowlful of thumbtacks, while Remembering Never's Peter Kowalsky growls like he's smoking a diesel exhaust pipe. Simplekill is deep and poetic (chew on the lyric "if silence is golden, call me copper"), while Rem Nev (abbreves, brah) is fiery and political. That about sums up the difference.

If you like bands with names that are sentences or have the words dead or non in them or if you're a radical, teenaged vegan, you'll be all over these albums like tattoos on a Starbucks jock. But be warned: This music's span of interest lasts exactly the length of your sophomore year of high school, until all that misdirected angst vanishes with a driver's license, a fake I.D., and a girlfriend.

Remembering Never plays at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 22, at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $10. Call 954-564-1074. Simplekill's next gig is Saturday, February 12, at the all-ages Sportsplex, 2575 Sportsplex Dr., Coral Springs. Tickets cost $5. Call 954-346-4428.
