Baby Robots

What's the principal difference between the altered-consciousness shoegazer and psychedelic genres? The former utilizes fuzzy distortion mainly on instrumental solos, often with wild abandon; the latter has a resolute, translucent haze of distortion blanketing everything. Were-Floridians-now-Texans Baby Robots derive inspiration from both ("shoegazadelic?") as evidenced by their 2001 release Lakitu: The Baby Robot. The album ranges from the blues-tinged, lysergic warp-drive of "I Can't Stand Me" to the Spacemen 3/My Bloody Valentine wall-of-guitar-noise "Leave Me A Note." Like fellow astral travelers Spiritualized, Baby Robots features one particle -- guitarist Bobby Baker -- as its nucleus, with an unfixed cast of electrons in orbital revolution (including members of ST-37). Since his Austin relocation, Baker's convened a more consistent lineup, all the better to tour with.

Baby Robots play "Wormhole Wednesday" at 9 p.m. February 2 at the Lounge, 517 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. The show is free. Call 561-655-9747.
