Big Bowl

Pats and Eagles battle for Lombardi's Trophy

SUN 2/6

Is there any representation of brash Americana bigger than the superhyped, superpromoted, supercorporate Super Bowl? This Sunday in Jacksonville, rendition XXXIX pits the defending champion New England Patriots against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In one corner, we have the Pats, boasting a quarterback who's performed perfectly in his playoff career and a head coach whose post-season mark of 9-1 matches Vince Lombardi's. In the other corner, we have an Eagle squad boasting nine Pro Bowlers and riding the dual waves of destiny and underdog status. The juicy matchup is full of suspense: Which musical talent will bare her (his?) breast first? Which player will become the next goat, à la Scott Norwood or Neil O'Donnell? Oh, and which team will win?

If you're not one of the lucky corporate bastards possessing a grossly inflated ticket, where to watch this game? You've got a bunch of choices, and here are a couple: Various Ale House locations, including Coral Springs (1915 N. University Dr.), are offering an all-you-can-eat buffet and all-you-can-drink wells and draft beer, along with your reserved seat. Cost is $50. Call 954-825-0574. Jags Fusion Bar (1925 Harrison St., Hollywood) offers $1.50 drafts and $1 shots along with a free barbecue buffet. Admission is $15. Call 954-588-7945. -- Russ Evans

Queens of the Court

You should give a hoot about this team

SAT 2/5

Six years ago, Florida Atlantic University's women's basketball team was nothing to write home about. But then the team started posting some .500-and-better seasons. Nowadays, you might want to get out your stationery and start penning, "Dear Mom..." because the team boasts 15 talented b-ballers -- from Adel Lizama, who's the Smurf of the team at a mere five-foot-five, to Keisha Bailey, who dominates at six-foot-five. At press time, the team was on a four-game winning streak and tied for third place in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Lady Owls play Jacksonville University at noon Saturday, and they take on Stetson Monday at 7 p.m. Games are at Florida Atlantic University (777 Glades Rd., Boca Raton). Tickets cost $6. Call 561-297-3710. -- Deirdra Funcheon

Run, Then Eat!

SAT 2/5

Coooooome and get it! A free pancake breakfast, free Jamba Juice smoothies, and a free massage! Oh sure, you have to run or walk the Maroone Rotary 5K first, and you pay a $20 registration fee, but your dough goes straight toward local high school programs and other good causes. The race begins and ends at Huizenga Plaza (corner of Andrews Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale). Call 954-424-0731, or visit www.rotaryfortlauderdale.org. -- Deirdra Funcheon
