His band Glassjaw draws comparisons to the sorely missed Faith No More, and Darryl Palumbo isn't doing much to debunk that association. With Head Automatica, Palumbo follows in Mike Patton's manic footsteps, forgets his day job, and takes up after-hours flirtation with ubiquitous producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. Patton he ain't, but Palumbo does have an excellent muse in the Automator.
Splicing blaxploitation funk, squiggly keyboard lines, and disco touches into Beck-style beats, Head Automatica attempts its own dance-rock union à la the Rapture or Primal Scream on its debut, Decadence.Though not quite as momentous as those acts, HA is still a notable entry into the fray, one that should translate well live. Described by Palumbo as an "electronic cock-rock band," the group will provide plenty of danceable grooves along with the synthesized wankfest.
Head Automatica plays as part of the Take Action! Tsunami Benefit tour, along with Sugarcult, the Early November, and Hawthorne Heights at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $14. All ages welcome. Call 954-727-0950.
