The Deep End

Drum 'n' Basics

Let's be honest. Outsiders have never considered Florida a bastion of electronic music. Sure, we can flaunt Orlando's breakbeats and, to a lesser degree, the monotonous trance of South Beach. But through the years the Sunshine State's scene has really maintained respect due to the work of AK1200.

Even amid unjust anti-rave laws and disillusioned clubbers, the O-Town native has persevered -- because, as longtime colleague Dieselboy declares, "he's the foundation of American drum 'n' bass." A DJ, producer, remixer, publisher, and promoter, AK1200 -- née Dave Minner -- has been crafting beats and digging through crates since 1989, moving from generic electro to the d 'n' b that is his trademark today. Along the way, he's garnered residencies at Spundae in San Francisco, started Junglized magazine with fellow junglist DJ Jeffee, remixed acts like Tribe Called Quest and Crystal Method, and released five acclaimed mix albums through Moonshine and :\run Recordings.

Recently, the multifaceted Minner founded the touring collective Planet of the Drums with fellow artists Dieselboy, Dara, and Messinian. Their DIY mission is to spread drum 'n' bass not just as music, but as culture. With AK1200 at the helm, Florida is finally adding distinction and direction to its wayward scene.

AK1200 bombs the bass at 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Sonar, 2006 Hollywood Blvd. in downtown Hollywood. Also featuring Storm vs. Slip187 vs. Elektra, Danny Bled vs. Ben Matrix, as well as GS and Shadow Spirit. 18+ welcome. $15 presale. Visit or call 954-761-8585 for information.
