Winter Blues Bash

Winter Blues (the Good Kind)

When most folks hear the word blues, mind's-eye images are of ragged old men bellowing sluggish "my baby done left me" tunes on smoke-shrouded stages. Yet blues is as diverse as folk or rock. Case in point: the Winter Blues Bash.

Atlanta-based guitarist/singer Roger "Hurricane" Wilson has traded riffs with legends Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but his 2002 disc Pastime is purely acoustic, harkening to the music's Delta and folk origins. South Floridians the Yard Dogs fold Cajun, zydeco (the rhythmic music of the black Cajuns), and classic rock into their mix, while the Regulators incorporate the atypical influence of jump-blues, that mid-to-late 1940s nexus of blues and danceable swing. Fellow stalwarts the Fabulous Fleetwoods (around since '82) are slightly more "crossover" oriented, their style based on the boogieing sounds of the Fab T-Birds and George Thorogood. File under is-this-a-great-country-or-what: They'll all be rocking under one roof.

Winter Blues Bash starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 20, at Alligator Alley, 1321 E. Commercial Blvd., Oakland Park. Food and drink specials run throughout the day, and tickets cost $6. Call 954-771-2220.
