Big Bossa Momma

Maria Rita

It's no wonder Brazilian singer Maria Rita is an eclectic bossa nova baby. She suckled from the breast of Brazil's all-time greatest female singer, the late Elis Regina, and she was raised by her father, pianist/composer Cesar Camargo. Considered a South American Norah Jones, Rita's music rocks like a tropical Sao Paolo lullaby. Her repertoire is a soothing combination of organic folklore and jazz, alternating between Brazilian classics and newer numbers. Last year, she was a three-time Latin Grammy winner, receiving awards for Best New Artist, Best MBP (Musica Popular Brasileira) Album, and Best Brazilian Song for her version of Milton Nascimento's "A Festa."

Maria Rita performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Manuel Artime Theater, 900 SW First St., Miami. Tickets range from $35 to $40. Call 305-575-5057.
