Thump and Grind

Hunger-Thump

Naming itself after Erica Jong's phraseology (see her book Fear of Flying) for unrequited, driving urges (Jong's vernacular for "jones," if you will), Boynton Beach's Hunger-Thump emerged from an overlap of the local music and poetry vistas. Poet/singer Marya Summers, a star of the international poetry-slam scene, encountered guitarist Jeff Mark, whereupon they found that mixing the paints from their respective palettes produced a good sonic collage. But as all easels and tables need good, solid legs, Summers and Mark recruited Fabulous Fleetwoods drummer Dan Hess and bass-thumping Flavor Pict refugee Ben Kmosko and proceeded to seduce them out of the cool and into the hot. Combining the suss of the Who, the fierceness of Rancid, and the vocal élan of Natalie Merchant's debauched younger sister, Hunger-Thump is the kind of band that'll put you in touch with your inner Charles Bukowski (or inner Mickey Rourke, at the very least).

Hunger-Thump performs with the Bikes at 10 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the Red Lion Pub, 10114 S. Military Trl., Boynton Beach. Free. Call 561-737-0434.
