Chaos Ensues

A Girl's Guide to Chaos demands respect

Ladies' nights typically consist of cheap drink specials, mud/Jell-O wrestling, or a Girls Gone Wildcombination of the two. Most women have come to realize that perhaps these promotional evenings serve XY chromosomes better than the XX. In retaliation, estrogen-fueled droves of dames have been taking the high road for alternative outings. This week, check out A Girl's Guide to Chaos, the play responsible for bringing bachelorette parties out of LaBare and, oddly enough, into the theater.

This hit takes place during the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" '80s, with strong "Women of the Nineties"-style characters, but you can see it now, in the 2000s. Explicit and raw, the plot-hopping adult comedy provides a humorous look into the love lives of three women. Author Cynthia Heimel's characters each represent a varied, painful splinter of female dynamics, and that has made the play durable. Most attendees can relate to one or all of its protagonists, be it Cynthia, a journalist in between great loves; the thrice-married and outspoken Rita; or Cleo, the insecure intellectual. Also in the play's cast is local thespian and sole masculine character Shawn Paonessa, who bravely represents all things male.

Heimel's 1986 screenplay is a combination of comedy taken from her tenure as Playboy's sex-advice columnist and bits from her novel Sex Tips for Girls. With other books under her belt, like Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth, I'm Kissing You Goodbye!, and When the Phone Doesn't Ring, It'll Be Me!, you can guess what themes they present. Material for the evening includes the "Top Ten Signs of Horniness" (an interactive piece) and an exploration of the terrors of dating after a long-term relationship's decay. While these issues could be sobering, Heimel's whip-smart, chick-lit approach has intoxicated female audiences quicker than Appletinis with Zima chasers.
