Long Live Lilith

Sarah McLachlan

As college students of the '90s graduated and joined the working world, the Lilith Fair phenomenon subsided and LF-associated artists like Paula Cole, Toni Childs, and Shawn Colvin were like subjects for "where are they now"-type articles. But we all know the trending quotient doesn't necessarily correlate with quality. The artist who founded Lilith Fair as an eclectic caravan of female talents and abilities (the other kind of T & A) is the perennially cool Canadian Sarah McLachlan. She combined the deeply personal style of 1960s/'70s songstresses like Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro with the alternately moody and sensuous, densely atmospheric soundscapes of contemporaries like Kate Bush and Tori Amos -- all this while managing to actually move units (the potent platters Surfacing and Mirrorball). She took a hiatus to spend quality time with her child -- and now she's back on the boards again. Also appearing are the Perishers, a Swedish foursome whose languid, reserved brand of emo-pop ought to be an enticing appetizer to Ms. McL's sumptuous main course.

Sarah McLachlan and the Perishers perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 8, at Office Depot Center, 1 Panthers Pkwy., Sunrise. Tickets cost $45 to $65. Call 954-835-8000 or 954-835-8499.
