Black, White, and Red All Over

Red Holloway

In his Encyclopedia of Jazz, Leonard Feather describes saxophonist Red Holloway as "capable of generating great excitement with his big sound and hard-driving, mainstream-modern style." In other words, the man from Chicago can blow. In his 60-year career, Holloway has shared the stage with many greats, from Dexter Gordon and B.B. King in the '40s to Billie Holiday, Sonny Rollins, and Chuck Berry in the '50s. But Holloway really hit the big time in the '60s as a part of jazz organist "Brother" Jack McDuff's band, which also included George Benson. Now a resident of Los Angeles, at 77 years old, Holloway leads his own quartet. Expect Red to come out swinging for the fences.

Red Holloway plays at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $35 per person or $60 per couple. Call 305-662-4005.
