Forged in the sweaty, Latin juke joints of late '60s New York City, boogaloo is the fusion of hip-swinging Cuban montuno rhythms and hard-driving American R&B. If that sounds too encyclopedic for you, I'll put it another way: Boogaloo is genuine dance music: sexy, smart, and thrilling all at the same time. The style has been integrated into modern funk and to a degree reggaeton, but only a select few musicians keep the original sound alive. One such group is San Diego groove technicians Robert Walter's 20th Congress. A master of the Hammond B3, Walter is unafraid to spike the punch with dashes of brash rock and bristling electro, but his roots remain in the classy, sassy boogaloo vibe. Joined by solo-chewing Cheme Gastelum on saxophone and wünderkind Jason Smart on drums, the former Greyboy Allstar keeps boogaloo moving into the future -- and your booty moving on the dance floor.
