They say hip-hop is a young man's game, and they're probably right. Apparently, though, even rappers well past their prime can still hang with the kids if they never grew up in the first place. For proof, just check out the Old School Summer Jam. This throwback party of mid-'80s hip-hop hooligans features 2 Live Crew, Magic Mike, and Gucci Crew, a trio of moderately talented rap outfits still hanging on by the virtue of their easy virtue. As long as their adolescent tendencies are still intact, these guys will take you all the way back to the eighth grade. As will Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, whose "It Takes Two" you tried to do the Running Man to at every junior-high dance. Their stuff stands up better to the test of time. Hell, "I wanna rock right now!" Totally radical -- this is the stuff summers are made of.
The Old School Summer Jam features 2 Live Crew, Disco Rick and the Gucci Crew, Magic Mike, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, MC Shy D, and Planet Patrol and is hosted by Raj from What's Happening. The show starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Coconut Grove Expo Center, 2700 S. Bayshore Dr., Miami. Tickets cost $35 in advance, $50 at the door. Call 954-523-3309.
