Interleague play ends this week

TUE 6/7 Unfortunately for baseball fans in Miami who despise pitchers' batting and would love to see the entire National League convert to designated hitters, Marlins home games versus American League teams employ the rules of the home park. Thus, you'll see Dontrelle Willis, Josh Beckett, Al Leiter, and company batting this week at the stadium, just like any other regular day at the park. But who among us doesn't like to change it up every now and then? You know, just a little sizzle to spice up something that has become rather dull. Not that interleague play is dull per se, but it's just not as novel as it was during its inception nine years ago. Still, this week is your last chance to see AL talent in Miami this season. Ichiro Suzuki, Brett Boone, and the rest of the Seattle Mariners come to town Tuesday to open the final interleague home stand of the 2005 campaign at Dolphins Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami). All three games of the Seattle series get going at 7:05 p.m. When the Mariners hit the road, Florida welcomes in Alfonso Soriano, Mark Texeira, and the Texas Rangers for a three-game set beginning Friday night at 7:30. Saturday's game versus the Rangers starts at 6:05 p.m.; a 1:05 p.m. first pitch starts off Sunday's matinee. Call 305-623-6100. -- Russ Evans

Coeds just wanna have fun

TUE 6/7 Ultimate Frisbee is a noncontact sport played by two seven-player teams, the object of which is to score goals. Basically, it's soccer with a plastic disc, but completions of passes are required; incompletes result in change of possession, so there's a little football mixed in too. It's one of those sports perfect for social interplay. All ages, all levels of play, and all walks of life are welcome to Pompeii's Children Ultimate Frisbee Club. Games are scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays at Nova Southeastern University's soccer fields (3301 College Ave., Fort Lauderdale). The club needs new and fresh talent during the summer months, and a rainy day is no deterrent; games continue unless there's lightning (in fact, romping with coeds in wet clothing can be particularly invigorating).
