The Last Comic Stands Up

John Heffron takes a stand in West Palm Beach

In August, comedian John Heffron won Last Comic Standing 2, for which the Detroit native received a half-hour Comedy Central special and a growing number of quizzical do I know you? looks from people on the street. Since then, Heffron's been on a perpetual tour, with only a day or so here and there to recuperate in Los Angeles with his family.

It turns out that Heffron's life has always been about standup comedy, which makes him a deserved winner of LCS2, one who has more than paid his dues. However, as he tells New Times by phone: "I've been doing standup for 13 to 14 years, but I'm on the road now even more," cashing in on the immediate recognition that comes, à la American Idol, with winning a well-received reality TV show. LCS2, he says, got him past the level where nobody knows you. If the audience already recognizes you, you're on the way to winning them over. "With standup, it's all about acceptance."

Another aspect of Heffron is frequently mentioned by his most fanatical fans. A visit to his blog (www.johnheffron.com) shows that most fan posts come from people with names like Tina, Jessica, and Emily. Consider this one posted June 2 by "lifesavergirl": "Hey John, I saw u a couple of times on TV and on my first opportunity I went to see u live. And I have to say, the first thing I noticed was that you are even better looking in person than on TV. I can't believe u are 35, u look like you're only in your mid-20s! U have such a sexy smile and beautiful eyes!!! I am so grateful that I was able to have my pic taken with u. Your jokes are so funny, especially the way u say them." It seems Heffron is popular with the ladies... and potential stalkers. But that's just another day of touring for this comic. John Heffron performs Thursday, June 16, through Sunday, June 19, at Palm Beach Improv, 550 S. Rosemary Ave., Ste. 250, West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $18.01 to $21.30. Call 561-833-1812.
