Praise the Lurid!

Reverend Horton Heat

Ladies and gents, cats and kittens, saints and sinners -- get ready for the full custom gospel sounds of the Reverend Horton Heat! For more than 20 years, the good reverend (known as James Heath outside the clergy) has been holding Mass for the masses, shepherding a faithful flock with his punk-partying psychobilly swing. Heat plies a hollow-body Gretsch guitar like a satanic Buddy Holly crossed with a rock-possessed preacherman. He's backed by the thunderous Jimbo Wallace on upright bass and Scott "Chernobyl" Churilla on drums. These fellas make one hell of a holy racket for a three piece, but they also slow it down for fan favorites like "Eat Steak" and the alcoholic's anthem, "It's Martini Time." If you've yet to be converted, check out this Sunday-night revival. You'll pay for it Monday morning, but it'll be forever worth it in the afterlife.

The Reverend Horton Heat plays with the Legendary Shack Shakers at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 3, at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Call 954-564-1074.
