The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (Hydra Head)
Pelican has pounded out instrumental epics for a few years now -- power-drone rock orchestrations built out of bottom-heavy riffage, downtuned vibrations, and good ol' feedback. Instrumental rock is rarely done right, though, and even when it is, it's wholly dependent on repetition, repetition, repetition. The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (huh?) gets around this mundane curse by plugging in melodic passages that massage a bit of freshness out of the emotive chords you just heard two minutes ago. Much like labelmates and kindred spirits Isis, the Chicago-based quartet has drifted a bit from the heavier sounds of its previous releases -- opting this time for dreamy, sprawling, narrative soundscapes that have the balls to even include acoustic guitars. Don't worry: It's all for effect, and the effect is more than worthwhile. Time to let these guys score a movie.
